Here is a new crochet snowflake pattern that works well for 2 dimensional or 3 dimensional snowflake ornaments. Below you can see the DETAILED PATTERN TUTORIAL FOR CROCHET SNOWFLAKE (in the above picture you can see how it is used for 3D ornament, while in the picture at the end of this post you can see it in use as 2D ornament).
To create 3D snowflake, you need to read the instructions in Tutorial for How to Make Crochet 3D Snowflake.
Abbreviation: ch= chain stitch, sl st= slip stitch, sc= single crochet, dc= double crochet, 2dc cluster = 2 double crochet cluster, tr= treble crochet, 2 tr cluster = 2 treble crochet cluster, st= stitch, lp= loop.
CROCHET PATTERN FOR SNOWFLAKE:
Row 1: ch 4, sl st 1 in first ch (picture 1).
Row 2: ch 3, dc 1 in loop of Row 1,
*ch 3, 2dc cluster*,
repeat *…* 4 times, then ch 3, sl st in the 3rd ch from the beginning of the row (picture 2).
Row 3: ch 1, sc 1 in the same st where ch 1 comes from, ch 5, sc 1 in the same st where previous sc was done,
*ch 4, skip next 3 ch of Row 2, then sc 1 in the st of dc2 cluster from Row 2, ch 5, then sc 1 in the same st of 2dc cluster from Row 2 as last sc.*
Repeat *…* 4 times, ch 4, sl st in the first sc at the beginning of this row (picture 3).
Row 4: sl st 3 in the next 3 ch from Row 3 first loop to reach the top of this loop, ch 3, dc 1 in the same loop (where last 3ch began),
*ch 2, sc 1 in the loop of 4ch from Row 3, ch 2 , dc 2 in the loop of 5 ch from Row 3, ch 3, dc 2 in the same loop*.
Repeat *…* 4 times, then ch 2, sc 1 in loop of 4 ch from Row 3, ch 2, dc 2 in the 1st loop of 5ch from Row 3, ch 1, dc 1 in the 3rd ch from the beginning of this row (picture 4).
Row 5: ch 3, tr in the same loop where this row started,
*ch 7, sl st in the previously made tr, ch 6, sl st in the 4th ch from the hook, ch 3, sl st in the previous sl st, ch 3, sl st in the previous sl st, sc 2 in the next 2 ch, sc 1 in the sl st that joined previous 7 ch loop to tr, ch 7, sl st in the same st as before, ch 6, sc 1 in the sc of Row 4, ch 6, 2tr cluster in the loop of 3 ch from Row 4*.
Repeat *…* 4 times, then ch 7, sl st in the previously made tr, ch 6, sl st in the 4th ch from the hook, ch 3, sl st in the previous sl st, ch 3, sl st in the previous sl st, sc 2 in the next ch, sc 1 in the sl st that joined previous 7 ch to tr, ch 7, sl st in the same st as before, ch 6, sc 1 in the sc of Row 4, ch 6, THEN sl st in the 3rd ch from the beginning of this row. Pull thread through the last loop and cut it off (picture 5). Snowflake is finished!
To make 3D snowflake you need to crochet 3 snowflakes of the same pattern.
You can either use the snowflake pattern I have provided above or choose the snowflake pattern from my earlier Tutorial for Making 3D Crochet Snowflake which also contains different snowflake pattern.
This last picture shows the snowflake that is attached with 2 tiny magnets to our MAGNET FRAME FOR ART which can be easily transformed to fit the design desires of the season :-)
